Power Plant Controller (PPC)

A redundant Power Plant Controller that tracks active power, reactive power and cos φ setpoints at the Point of Interconnection with configurable ramp rates per grid code. Three clustered Advantech MIC-770 V3 units with automatic failover keep the plant under control.

PPC

Redundant Power Plant Controller

The PPC is the on-site brain of every Nexus installation. It runs closed-loop PID control at the Point of Interconnection and reads 7,000+ signals in under 600 ms with 1-second control loops.

It is installed as a cluster of three Advantech MIC-770 V3 controllers with automatic failover and redundant on-site and cloud storage, so there is no single point of failure.

Control modes

  • Active power control with configurable ramp rates
  • Reactive power control for grid stability services
  • Power factor (cos φ) control at the interconnection point
  • Frequency support: FSM, LFSM-O/U, FCR, aFRR, mFRR
  • Voltage control with U-Q droop, tunable per grid code
  • State of Charge management across all containers
  • Grid-forming for black-start and weak-grid operation
  • Clustered hardware with automatic failover

Nexus in depth

Control, architecture, security, markets

Every technical layer of the Nexus platform, from closed-loop grid control to aggregator connectivity.

Power Control Modes

Active Power Control

Tracks a reference value. Negative means absorption, positive means injection, with configurable ramp rates per grid code.

Reactive Power Control

Reactive setpoint tracking with the same absorption and injection logic for grid-stability services.

Power Factor cosφ

Maintains cosφ at the interconnection point by modulating reactive power relative to active output.

Ramp Rate Control

Controlled rate of change for power injection and absorption, configurable per plant and grid code.

Grid Support Modes

Frequency Support

Active-frequency droop on the operator’s P-F curve. FSM for 200 mHz, LFSM-O/U for larger excursions. Supports FCR, aFRR, mFRR services.

Voltage Control

Reactive droop at the POI following a U-Q characteristic, tunable per grid code.

State of Charge Management

Manages SoC bands across all plant containers for optimal battery longevity and availability.

Grid-Forming

Grid-forming capabilities for black-start and weak-grid operation in islanded conditions.

FAQ

Clear answers for BESS and PV owners

The essentials before connecting your station to Nexus or preparing for market-ready operations.

Battery storage (BESS) and photovoltaics, with or without a data logger — multi-vendor inverters, BMS, PCS, MV/LV, and cooling and fire-suppression subsystems are all supported.

Closed-loop PID for active and reactive power, ramp rate control, power factor (cos φ), frequency support (FSM ±200 mHz, LFSM-O/U), voltage droop, SoC band management, and grid-forming for black-start. All algorithms are configurable per grid code.

Modbus TCP and RTU, IEC 61850, IEC 104, IEC 101, MMS & GOOSE in the field. IEC 104 toward HEDNO for grid operator communication. HEnEx/IPTO data interfaces for market connectivity.

7,000+ signals delivered in under 600ms via parallel connections. 1-second monitoring loops. Redundant on-site PPC with automatic failover and dual cloud storage ensure high availability. All proven in production across 5 commissioned plants.

Nexus is designed to work with every aggregator platform. Setpoints from the aggregator are executed in real-time via the closed-loop EMS. Full HEDNO compliance for DSO/TSO telemetry, and live HEnEx/IPTO data feeds for market operations.

Yes. Nexus is built on a zero-trust architecture with enterprise authentication, end-to-end encryption, role-based access control, and full audit logs.
